The upgrade from an older Seiko 5 to a current one, and what the two missing features actually change.

The NH35 sold to third parties carries a wider published tolerance than Seiko’s own regulated version of the same caliber, the 4R35, which is stated at -35 to +45 seconds per day. Hold that number next to the 7S26’s -20 to +40 — it matters below.
Hacking, and what it changes day to day
Hacking stops the seconds hand when the crown is pulled to the setting position. The NH35 hacks; the 7S26 does not. On a hacking movement you pull the crown, the seconds hand freezes, you line it up with a reference at the top of a minute, set the minute and hour, and push the crown home on the exact second. You can put the watch to network time and be confident it is right to the second.
On the 7S26 the seconds hand keeps sweeping while you set the minute hand, so you are aiming at a moving target. In practice you land within ten or fifteen seconds and no closer. For a great many owners that is completely irrelevant. For anyone who likes their watches synced to the second, or who compares two watches on the same wrist, it is the single most-felt difference between these two calibers.
Nothing about hacking changes how either watch runs once it is going. It is a setting convenience, not a timekeeping feature. The seconds hand steps at the same six beats a second on both — 21,600 vph — so the two look identical in motion.
Hand-winding, and what it changes day to day
Hand-winding lets you wind the mainspring from the crown. The NH35 hand-winds; the 7S26 does not. To start a stopped NH35 you turn the crown twenty or thirty times and it is running. To start a stopped 7S26 you shake it gently side to side for twenty or thirty seconds, or put it on and move around for a few minutes until the rotor has stored enough energy.
For a single watch worn every day this never comes up, because an automatic worn daily does not stop. The difference only appears when a watch has been sitting. Own one 7S26 Seiko and wear it, and you may go years without meeting the omission. Rotate several watches and everything you pick up after a week is dead, and the shake-to-start routine becomes a small weekly tax.
Both features were left out of the 7S26 deliberately, to reduce part count on a movement Seiko built in enormous volume. The 4R family that replaced it added them back. Neither omission is a fault, and neither is about quality — they are about what the movement was built to cost.
The part that surprises people
The intuition is that the newer, hacking, hand-winding movement must also keep better time. On the published figures it does not. Seiko states the 7S26 at -20 to +40 seconds per day. The NH35sold externally carries a wider published tolerance, and the Seiko-badged version of the same movement, the 4R35, is stated at -35 to +45. On paper the 7S26’s window is the tighter of the two.
Read that carefully, because it is easy to over-read. A stated window is a production tolerance across many units, not a promise about the watch on your wrist, and individual examples of both vary far more than the gap between the two windows. It does not mean a given 7S26 will out-perform a given NH35. What it does mean is that the upgrade from a 7S26 to an NH35 is not a timekeeping upgrade — you are buying setting convenience, not accuracy. Either movement can be regulated closer by a watchmaker.
Where each movement turns up
The 7S26 is a Seiko movement: it powered the Seiko 5 line for decades and lives on in older references still in circulation, most famously the SNK809 and the SNK field family, along with the discontinued SKX divers. You do not buy a bare 7S26; you buy a Seiko that has one. The NH35 is the reverse case: as a bare movement it is what microbrands buy from Seiko Instruments, so it turns up across a huge range of independent watches, while the identical caliber inside a current Seiko is badged 4R35 (date) or 4R36 (day-date). The honest comparison is usually an older Seiko 5 with a 7S26 against a newer Seiko, or a microbrand, on the NH35.
The day-date wrinkle
One difference the feature list hides: the 7S26 carries a day-date, while the NH35 is date-only. If the day display matters to you, the like-for-like current-Seiko replacement is not the NH35 or 4R35 but the day-date 4R36, which is the NH36 under Seiko’s own name. Moving off a 7S26 does not have to cost you the day wheel — you just want the day-date version of the newer family. Worth knowing before you assume the upgrade means giving up an indication.
So what are you actually choosing between?
In the real world this is rarely two loose movements on a bench. It is the choice between an older Seiko 5 built on the 7S26 and a current 5 Sports or Prospex on the NH35, 4R35 or 4R36. The newer watch usually brings more than the movement — a bigger case, a day-date, a different crystal, updated finishing — so the caliber is one line in a longer list of changes. It is worth separating the movement’s contribution from everything else you are paying for.
If you own one watch, wear it daily, and set it once, the 7S26’s omissions never surface and its narrower stated window is a quiet point in its favor. If you rotate watches, sync to the second, or simply want to start a stopped watch without shaking it, the NH35 earns its place every week. Both are among the most produced mechanical movements ever made, both are serviceable almost anywhere, and neither is the wrong answer. Where the two generations overlap on price is the entry level.
What is shared, and worth not losing sight of
For all the attention the two differences get, the list of things these movements have in common is longer. Both are automatic and wind bidirectionally. Both beat at 21,600 vph and hold about 41 hours. Both are among the most produced mechanical movements ever made, which means a watchmaker anywhere has seen them, parts are cheap and plentiful, and neither is going to be orphaned any time soon. Neither is a chronometer, and neither pretends to be.
That shared foundation is why this is a comparison about convenience rather than class. You are not choosing between a good movement and a bad one. You are choosing between an older Seiko workhorse that asks you to shake it awake and set it approximately, and a newer one that lets you wind it and set it to the second — with essentially the same running behavior once either is on the wrist.
Servicing follows the same logic. A stopped or slowing example of either movement is worth taking to a watchmaker rather than writing off, because both are simple, well-understood calibers with common parts. On a watch at this price many owners choose to replace rather than service, but the option to keep either running is genuinely open, and that is part of why both have stayed in circulation so long.
It also means the upgrade is reversible in spirit: nothing about moving to an NH35 makes a 7S26 watch you already own worse, and nothing about keeping a 7S26 leaves you stuck with a movement the trade has forgotten. Both remain sensible watches to own, which is a rare thing to be able to say about two calibers a generation apart.

Is the NH35 more accurate than the 7S26?
Not by specification. Seiko states -20 to +40 seconds per day for the 7S26 against a wider published tolerance for the externally sold NH35 and -35 to +45 for the regulated 4R35. The NH35’s advantages are hacking and hand-winding, not timekeeping.
What does hacking do on the NH35?
The seconds hand stops when the crown is pulled to set the time, so the watch can be set to the second. The 7S26 has no hacking, so its seconds hand keeps running while you set the minute hand and you can only get within ten or fifteen seconds.
How do I start a stopped 7S26 if it has no hand-winding?
Shake it gently side to side for twenty or thirty seconds, or wear it and move around for a few minutes. The crown will not wind it, because the 7S26 has no hand-winding gearing.
Should I upgrade from an SNK809 to an NH35 watch?
Only if hacking, hand-winding, or a different case and complication matter to you. The timekeeping will not improve — the 7S26 in the SNK809 actually carries the narrower stated window — so buy the newer watch for its features, not its accuracy.
Are the NH35 and 7S26 the same size?
The NH35 base measures 27.4 mm in diameter and 5.32 mm in height. Seiko does not publish the 7S26 alongside it for a like-for-like figure here, so we will not quote a dimension we cannot source.
