Best Seiko GMT watches

In 2022 Seiko put a mechanical GMT into a case that costs about $400. Before that, the cheapest genuinely mechanical GMT from a major manufacturer was several times the price. It is the most significant thing Seiko has done at the entry level in a decade, and it comes with one limitation that most coverage glosses over.

Caller GMT versus traveler GMT

Every Seiko GMT in this price range uses the 4R34, which is a caller GMT. That means the independently adjustable hand is the 24-hour hand. The local hour hand is fixed to the minute hand and cannot be jumped forward or back on its own.

A traveler GMT — sometimes called a flyer GMT — works the other way: the local hour hand jumps in one-hour steps while the 24-hour hand keeps running on home time.

If you have colleagues or family in another time zone and want to glance at their local time, a caller GMT is exactly right. If you fly frequently and want to reset to local time on arrival without stopping the watch, a caller GMT is the wrong tool: changing your local zone means pulling the crown and resetting the whole thing, which also loses your seconds sync.

Seiko does build traveler GMTs, in the Prospex 6R54 references — they cost several times the SSK line. This page is about the affordable ones, so every pick here is a caller.

What the bezel adds

The SSK001, SSK003 and SSK005 carry a rotating 24-hour bezel, which gives you a third time zone: set the 24-hour hand to zone two, then rotate the bezel to offset zone three against it. The SSK025 has no rotating bezel, so it tracks two zones only. That is the practical difference between them and it is worth more than the dial color.

How to choose a Seiko GMT

Answer the caller-versus-traveler question first

If the honest answer is “I fly every month and want to change local time on landing,” none of these is the right watch and you should know that before spending $400 rather than after. If the answer is “my family is five hours behind me,” any of them works and you can choose on looks.

Then decide whether you want the third zone

The rotating bezel on the SSK001/003/005 is a genuine functional difference from the bezel-less SSK025. Two zones covers most people; three is useful if you work across regions.

Size the case honestly

The SSK001 family shares the 5KX case: 42.5 mm wide, 46 mm lug-to-lug, and 13.6 mm thick — slightly taller than the standard SRPD because of the GMT works. That is a substantial watch. The SSK025 at 39.4 mm is the smaller option, at the cost of the bezel.

Do not expect ISO diver capability

These are 100 m watches without a screw-down crown. Swimming is fine; diving is not, and the bezel is a 24-hour scale rather than a timing bezel. The divers are a different page.

Setting one correctly

The sequence that catches people: set the 24-hour hand to your reference zone first, then set local time. Doing it the other way round means re-checking the 24-hour hand, because the two are geared together on a caller movement.
