The NH34 is an NH35 with a caller GMT hand. What that complication does, and the caller-versus-traveler distinction that trips people up.

The NH34 is the NH35 with a GMT complication added: an independent 24-hour hand that tracks a second time zone. It is a caller GMT — you adjust the 24-hour hand, not the local hour hand. Both movements run at 21,600 vph, hold 41 hours, and use 24 jewels. Seiko fits them to its own watches as the 4R34 and 4R35.

What the GMT complication adds
A GMT watch has a fourth hand that points to a 24-hour scale. Set that hand to a second time zone — home while you travel, or a colleague or market in another country — and you can read two zones at once: the main hands for one, the 24-hour hand for the other. Because the extra hand runs on a 24-hour cycle, there is no confusion about whether the second zone is morning or evening. That is the whole appeal, and the NH34 delivers it on the same reliable base as the plain NH35.
Caller vs traveler — the distinction that matters
Here is the part people get wrong. On the NH34 the 24-hour hand is independently adjustable, and the local hour hand is not. You set your second zone by moving the GMT hand, and you leave the main time alone. That makes it a caller GMT: ideal for watching a second zone from your desk without disturbing the time you actually live in.
A traveler GMT works the opposite way. Its local hour hand jumps in one-hour steps, so when you land in a new zone you reset local time in seconds without stopping the watch, while the 24-hour hand stays on home time. That is the function frequent flyers want, and it is a different, pricier movement Seiko sells higher up its range — not something the NH34 or 4R34 can do. Neither type is better in the abstract; they suit different lives. Caller: track a fixed second zone from one place. Traveler: cross zones and reset local time on arrival.
When a caller GMT is the right one
If your second zone is fixed — family abroad, a home office in another country, a market you follow — you set the GMT hand once and mostly leave it, and the caller does exactly what you need for less money. If you fly often and want to snap local time to wherever you have landed, the caller will frustrate you, because you would have to reset the whole watch by the main crown rather than jumping the hour hand. Match the movement to how you actually move, not to the word “GMT” on the dial.
Where you will find the NH34 and 4R34
Seiko’s own caller GMT lives in the 5 Sports GMT line — the SSK references such as the SSK001 — where it is badged 4R34. The externally sold NH34 is what microbrands buy to build their own affordable GMTs. If you are shopping the category, the Seiko GMT options are mostly caller movements at this price, with traveler GMTs sitting higher in the range.
What it shares with the NH35
Strip away the GMT hand and the NH34 is an NH35: same 21,600 vph beat, same 41-hour reserve, same 24 jewels, same hacking and hand-winding, same base architecture. The GMT complication adds the 24-hour wheel and hand on top of that engine. It is the same relationship the NH-series always has with Seiko’s own 4R calibers — the difference between the badges is stated regulation and sales channel, not the mechanism.
Reading a GMT hand
The GMT hand makes a single full turn of the dial every 24 hours, against a 24-hour scale rather than the 12-hour one the main hands use. That is what lets it show a second zone without ambiguity: when it points to the 4 o’clock position, the scale tells you whether that is 08:00 or 20:00 in the tracked zone. Set it to your second zone and you read that zone directly off the fourth hand while the main hands carry on showing local time.
Some GMT watches add a 24-hour bezel that can be turned to track a third zone by offset, but that is a feature of the watch rather than the movement, and it varies from reference to reference. The movement’s contribution is the independently set 24-hour hand; how a given watch frames it is a case-and-bezel decision.
A concrete case makes it clear. Say you live on the US west coast and your family is in London. You set the main hands to your local time and the 24-hour hand to London, and from then on a glance at the fourth hand tells you whether it is a reasonable hour to call. You are not traveling; you are tracking a fixed second zone from one place — which is exactly what a caller GMT is for.
Setting a caller GMT
On the NH34 you set the main time as you would on any watch, then adjust the 24-hour hand separately to the zone you want to track. Because the caller design keeps the local hour hand tied to the main time, you never move it on its own — you only ever move the GMT hand to the second zone. Once set, both zones advance together, and you leave it alone until your tracked zone changes.
The limitation is the flip side of the same design. If you fly somewhere and want the watch to show your new local time, you cannot simply jump the hour hand forward an hour or two; you reset the main time by the crown, which also means resetting to the second if you care about that. For someone whose second zone stays put, that never comes up. For someone who keeps changing which zone is local, it is a recurring chore.
Who should skip the NH34
If you fly often and want to land, pull the crown, and snap local time to the new zone in seconds while home time stays put on the 24-hour hand, the NH34 is the wrong movement — that is a traveler GMT, a different and more expensive caliber Seiko sells higher up. There is no shame in the caller doing less; it is doing a different, cheaper job. But buying a caller and expecting traveler behavior is the most common way people end up disappointed with an affordable GMT.
Equally, if you never actually need a second time zone, the GMT hand is just a fourth hand to set. The plain NH35 gives you the same movement without it, usually for less, and there is nothing to gain from the complication if it is only going to sit on your home zone.
Why the NH34 mattered
Before movements like the NH34 and 4R34, an automatic GMT was largely the preserve of higher-priced watches. Building the complication onto a movement everyone already trusted brought a mechanical second-zone watch down to a price the rest of this site’s range lives at, and it did so without asking buyers to accept an unfamiliar or fragile caliber underneath. That is the quiet significance of the NH34: not that it is exotic, but that it is ordinary in the best sense, with one useful hand added.
It is also serviceable on the same terms as the rest of the NH and 4R family — common, well-understood, and easy to find parts and knowledge for. The GMT wheel and hand sit on top of that familiar base, so a watchmaker who can service an NH35 can generally handle an NH34.
For a first mechanical GMT, that ordinariness is a feature. You get a genuine second-zone complication on a base you can trust and service anywhere, and the only homework is understanding that it is a caller: set the 24-hour hand, leave the main time alone, and it does exactly what it promises. Go in expecting that and the NH34 is one of the easiest ways into a two-zone watch; go in expecting a traveler and it will feel like it is missing a trick it was never built to do.
