How tax-free actually works

Japan operates a tax-free scheme for temporary visitors. The mechanics that matter:

• ·You must be a temporary visitor — the scheme is not open to residents or to long-stay visa holders
• ·Your physical passport is required at the point of sale. A photograph of it is not accepted
• ·The retailer must be licensed for tax-free sales. Large electronics chains and department stores generally are; small independents often are not
• ·There is a minimum spend threshold, and watches count as general goods rather than consumables
• ·The goods must leave Japan with you. Customs can ask to see them on departure

The saving is the 10% consumption tax. On a mid-range Seiko that is real money, and it is the main reason buying in Japan can beat buying at home even before the domestic price difference.

The warranty question

This is where people get caught. A watch bought in Japan comes with a Japanese warranty card. Seiko’s warranty terms and their application vary by market, and a service center in your country may or may not accept it.

It is worth asking the retailer directly, in writing if possible, what the card covers and where. It is also worth accepting that on an entry or mid-range Seiko, the warranty may be worth less than the tax saving — a 4R36 movement replacement is not an expensive event.

What the selection is actually like

Substantially wider than abroad, and that is the real reason to buy there rather than the tax. The Japan-only references — SARB, SARY, SBDC, SZSB, SBDL — sit on shelves alongside the international catalog, at domestic prices without a gray-market margin on top.

Prices are not uniformly lower. Popular international references are often priced similarly to elsewhere; the advantage is concentrated in the domestic-only lines.

Before you pay

• ·Confirm the retailer is tax-free licensed and has your passport in hand
• ·Confirm the reference number on the box matches the watch and the receipt
• ·Ask what the warranty covers outside Japan and get the answer in writing
• ·Check your own country’s duty-free allowance — you may owe tax on arrival
• ·Keep the receipt and the tax-free paperwork accessible for departure customs

That last one catches people. Japanese customs can ask to see tax-free purchases when you leave, and having the watch buried in checked luggage makes that awkward.
