These are the two default workhorse automatics, one Japanese and one Swiss. The ETA 2824-2 runs at 28,800 vph for a smoother sweep, carries 25 jewels, holds roughly 38 to 42 hours, and is generally better finished. The NH35 runs at 21,600 vph, is cheaper, turns up everywhere, and is serviceable almost anywhere. Both hack and hand-wind.

If a mid-priced automatic is not running a Seiko caliber, it is very often running an ETA 2824-2 or its clone. The 2824 has been the Swiss industry’s default three-hand workhorse for decades, the way the NH35 is the default in the Japanese and microbrand world. The feature set is almost matched: both hack, both hand-wind, both carry a date, and the jewel count and reserve are close. The real differences are the beat rate, the finishing, the cost and the ubiquity — and each pulls in a different direction.

Beat rate: eight against six

The 2824 beats at 28,800 vph, so its seconds hand advances eight times a second. The NH35 beats at 21,600, six times a second. Both hands step rather than glide, but eight steps read as the smoother sweep, and it is the most visible difference between the two. It is the same gap that separates most Swiss movements at this level from most Japanese ones — a convention, not an accident, and the subject of its own page.

As always, the smoother sweep is something you look at, not a timekeeping guarantee. A faster balance is a little less disturbed by shock in theory, but regulation and adjustment matter far more to how a watch actually runs. An uncertified 2824 can easily keep worse time than a well-regulated NH35. Want the sweep for the sweep; do not assume it buys accuracy on its own.

Finishing and regulation: the ETA’s edge

The 2824 is generally the better-finished movement, and it is easier to regulate finely. It is built to be adjusted, comes in grades that raise the standard of finishing and adjustment, and responds well to a watchmaker dialing it in across positions. That is a real advantage if you value a movement that can be brought to a tight, stable rate and that looks the part through a display back.

The NH35 is finished for function rather than show. It is a robust, plainly built caliber designed to be made in enormous volume and to work, not to be admired through a window. It can be regulated by any competent watchmaker and often lands well inside its factory window when it is, but it does not have the 2824’s reputation for fine adjustment or its decorative finishing. This is the clearest sense in which the ETA is the more refined movement.

Cost and where each turns up

The flip side is price, and it is decisive. The 2824 costs meaningfully more and generally turns up in pricier watches — it is the movement inside a great many Swiss automatics well above the range this site mostly covers. The NH35 is cheap, which is exactly why it is everywhere: it lets a brand put a hacking, hand-winding automatic into an affordable watch and spend the saved money on the case, dial or crystal instead.

So the honest framing is not better versus worse but refined versus value. The 2824 is the more polished, finer-adjusting, smoother-sweeping movement, and you pay for that. The NH35 is the value and ubiquity champion, the caliber that democratized the mechanical watch by being good enough and cheap enough to go anywhere. Both are among the most produced automatics of their kind, and both are proven over decades.

The Sellita SW200 and the wider Swiss picture

One wrinkle worth knowing: the 2824 is no longer the only movement of its kind. The Sellita SW200 is a clone of the 2824-2, dimensionally compatible and functionally the same, and it has become the modern equivalent as ETA restricted supply of its movements to outside brands. If a Swiss watch at this level is not on an ETA, it is very often on a Sellita, and for the purposes of this comparison the two behave the same way against the NH35 — same eight-beat sweep, same broad advantages, same higher cost.

That matters because it means the Swiss side of this matchup is really a family of near identical movements rather than a single caliber. It does not change the trade-off with the NH35; it just means the movement facing the NH35 might be badged ETA or Sellita depending on the brand and the year, with no practical difference to how the comparison plays out.

Serviceability over the long run

Both movements are serviceable, but the NH35 has the edge on ease and cost. It is one of the most produced mechanical movements in the world, so any watchmaker has seen it, parts are cheap and plentiful, and at this price many owners will simply replace a movement rather than pay to service it. The identical caliber inside a current Seiko is badged 4R35 or 4R36, which only deepens the parts pool.

The 2824 and its Sellita twin are also well understood and widely serviced, particularly by watchmakers used to Swiss calibers, and a good 2824 is worth maintaining rather than discarding because the watch around it usually justifies the work. The difference is one of degree: the NH35 is the more disposable, more universally supported movement, while the 2824 is the one you are more likely to service and keep because of what it sits inside.

How to choose between them

In the real world you almost never choose between two bare movements; you choose between two watches, and the caliber is one line in a longer list. Still, if the movement is the sticking point, the decision is clean. Want the eight-beat sweep, the finer finishing and the ability to regulate a movement tightly, and willing to pay for the pricier watch it sits in? The 2824 or its Sellita equivalent is the more refined choice. Want a hacking, hand-winding automatic at the lowest sensible price, serviceable anywhere and backed by a vast parts ecosystem? Both are defensible, and neither is the wrong answer. The ETA is the more polished movement; the NH35 is the one that put a reliable mechanical automatic within reach of almost any budget. They are the two industries’ default answers to the same question — how to build a dependable everyday automatic — and the answers differ mostly in beat rate, finishing and price, not in what the watch does for you day to day.

They are also alike to live with. Either movement, set once and worn, keeps a watch running and roughly on time without fuss, and either can be regulated closer by a watchmaker if you want it tighter than the factory left it. The choice between them is a choice of emphasis — the ETA and its Sellita twin lean toward refinement and the eight-beat sweep, the NH35 toward value, ubiquity and easy service — rather than a choice between a capable movement and a compromised one. Both have become defaults precisely because they are hard to go wrong with, and a watch built on either is a watch whose engine you never have to apologize for. Match the movement to what you actually want from the watch, and you cannot really make a mistake here.
