Seiko 5 Sports SRPD65

What this reference is

The SRPD65 belongs to what enthusiasts call the “5KX” family: the case Seiko introduced in 2019 to succeed the discontinued SKX007. It keeps the SKX’s proportions and crown-at-4 layout while replacing the 7S26 with the 4R36, which hacks and hand-winds.

What it lost in the transition is the screw-down crown and the 200 m ISO 6425 rating. The SKX was a certified diver; the 5KX is not, and Seiko does not market it as one. That distinction is what separates it from the Turtle.

Sizing it against your wrist

46 mm lug-to-lug is moderate — it suits most adult wrists above about 6.25 inches. The number that catches people out is the 13.4 mm thickness, which is tall and will catch on a shirt cuff.

Note that the lug-to-lug is identical. The smaller SRPG references are not shorter across the wrist — they are narrower and 1.7 mm slimmer, which is where the difference in how they wear comes from.

What it competes with

• ·SRPD93 — same case and movement, blue sunray dial, usually on a strap and usually cheaper
• ·Turtle SRPE93 — the real diver, about $180 more
• ·SSK001 — same case family plus a mechanical GMT
• ·Orient Kamasu — sapphire and 200 m for similar money

Living with it

The crystal will scratch

The 22 mm lugs are the best thing about it

Do not set the date at night

The 4R36’s date mechanism engages between roughly 9 pm and 3 am. Forcing the quickset during that window risks the date wheel. The correct sequence is here.
