Seiko 4R36 vs 6R35
The upgrade inside Seiko's own range. What the 70-hour reserve and tighter window buy — and what they do not.

The 6R35 buys two things over the 4R36: a 70-hour power reserve against 41, and a tighter stated window of -15 to +25 seconds a day against -35 to +45. Both run at 21,600 vph with 24 jewels, hack and hand-wind. The 6R35 does not sweep smoother, and it drops the day for a date-only dial.

This is the upgrade within Seiko’s own mechanical range: the 4R36 is the movement in the 5 Sports and the affordable Prospex divers, and the 6R35 is the caliber in the SPB Prospex line, the modern Alpinist and higher-tier Presage. Most people meet the two as the reason one Seiko costs roughly double another that looks similar. The published figures show exactly where that difference is, and where it is not.

Two lines move up, one line moves down, and two of the lines people expect to change do not. That pattern is the whole story of this comparison, so it is worth walking each part.
What the 6R35 buys: seventy hours
The headline is the power reserve, and it is a genuine quality-of-life difference. Take a 4R36 watch off on Friday evening and it has usually stopped by Sunday morning; take a 6R35 watch off and it is still running on Monday. A 70-hour reserve survives a weekend in a drawer, which changes how you use a watch you rotate rather than wear daily — you pick it up Monday and it is still going, still roughly on time, no restart and no full reset.
For a single watch worn every day this never comes up, because an automatic worn daily does not run down. The reserve is worth most to someone who owns several watches and wears each in turn. If that is you, seventy hours is the difference between a watch that greets you awake and one you have to wind and set every time it comes back into rotation.
What the 6R35 buys: a tighter window
Seiko states the 6R35 at -15 to +25 seconds a day, against the 4R36’s -35 to +45. That is a materially narrower factory window — the spread shrinks and it sits closer to zero. It is still not a chronometer specification, and Seiko does not claim it is, but on paper it is the tighter movement, and in practice a 6R watch tends to leave the factory better regulated than a 4R one.
Keep the honesty in place, though. A stated window is a production tolerance across many units, not a promise about the watch on your wrist, and individual examples of both vary. A well-regulated 4R36 can run inside a poorly regulated 6R35. What the specification tells you is the factory intent, and the 6R35’s intent is tighter — worth having, but not a guarantee about any one watch.
What it does not buy: a smoother seconds hand
This is the assumption to drop. The 6R35 runs at 21,600 vph, exactly the same as the 4R36 and every other 4R and 7S movement. Stepping up the Seiko range does not get you an eight-beat movement — the seconds hand steps six times a second on both, and the two look identical in motion. People assume the more expensive Seiko must sweep more smoothly and it does not; that eight-beat sweep is a Swiss characteristic at these prices, not something the 6R35 offers over the 4R36.
What it costs you: the day
The 6R35 is date-only. The 4R36 is day-date. So the more expensive movement actually shows one fewer indication on the dial: a 6R35 watch tells you the date, while a cheaper 4R36 watch tells you the day and the date. If the weekday display matters to you, the upgrade costs it, and that surprises people who assume paying more adds complications rather than removing one.
It is a design choice rather than a limitation — Seiko fits the 6R35 to watches where a clean date-only dial suits the range, and it makes a day-date 6R sibling for lines that want it. But on a straight 4R36-to-6R35 swap, the day is what you leave behind.
Why you rarely buy the movement alone
Here is the part that matters most for a buying decision: the movement is only one piece of what separates a 4R watch from a 6R watch. Seiko does not fit the 6R35 to Hardlex-crystal, entry-cased watches. A 6R watch also brings a sapphire crystal, better case finishing, and often a higher grade of bracelet and dial work. When you pay the step up, most of what you are paying for is that package, not the caliber in isolation.
That reframes the whole question. If only the movement mattered — seventy hours and a tighter window against a lost day and the same sweep — the case for the 6R35 would be real but modest. What actually justifies the price is everything that travels with it. The breakdown of where a Seiko’s price goes makes this concrete: the movement is a line item, and sapphire, case work and finishing are usually the larger ones.
What stays the same
For all the attention the differences get, the two movements share more than they differ. Both are automatic with bidirectional winding, both beat at 21,600 vph, both carry 24 jewels, and both hack and hand-wind — so both can be set to the second and started from the crown. Both are simple, well-understood calibers that a watchmaker can service, and neither is a chronometer or pretends to be. The 6R35 is not a different kind of movement from the 4R36; it is the same architecture with a bigger mainspring barrel for the reserve and a tighter regulation target.
That shared foundation is why this is an upgrade about endurance and regulation rather than class. You are not moving from a poor movement to a good one; you are moving from a good one to a good one that runs longer between winds and is aimed a little closer to zero, while giving up the day.
Who each one suits
Choose the 4R36 if you want the day-date, the lower price, and a movement that is everywhere and serviceable anywhere — and accept that you will wind and set it after a weekend off. Choose the 6R35 if the 70-hour reserve fits how you rotate watches, you value the tighter factory window, and you want the sapphire-and-finishing package that comes with it — and accept the date-only dial and the identical six-beat sweep.
Either way, buy the whole watch rather than the caliber. The 6R35 sits inside Seiko’s higher-tier automatic references, and the 4R36 inside the more affordable tier below it. Decide on the reserve, the crystal, the case and the dial you want, and let the movement follow from that, because on its own the caliber is only part of the difference you are paying for.
Servicing and the long view
Both calibers are simple, common, well-understood movements that a watchmaker can service, and neither is likely to be orphaned. That matters more than it sounds, because a movement you can keep running is a movement worth buying. The 4R36 is one of Seiko’s most-produced calibers, so parts and knowledge for it are everywhere and a service is routine. The 6R35 is newer and less numerous, but it shares Seiko’s mechanical design language and is serviced on the same terms; its longer mainspring barrel and tighter regulation are refinements of a familiar architecture rather than an exotic mechanism.
Seiko recommends servicing a mechanical watch roughly every few years, though in practice both movements often run far longer before they need attention. At the 4R36’s price level many owners choose to replace rather than service; at the 6R35’s, the watch around the movement usually justifies keeping it maintained. That is the long-view version of the same theme running through this whole comparison. You are not really choosing a bare caliber; you are choosing the watch it lives in and how you intend to look after it over years of wear, and both of these movements reward being kept rather than discarded.
