What a box crystal is

A box crystal is flat on top with near-vertical sides, so it stands proud of the bezel like a block of glass rather than curving like a dome. Where the vertical side meets the dial it produces a sharp refractive edge that distorts the outer track of the dial while leaving the center completely clear.

It is more expensive to produce than a domed crystal and it is the single thing that makes this watch look like it costs three times what it does. A domed crystal — as on the Orient Bambino — curves across the whole surface and distorts differently.

It is still Hardlex, not sapphire, and a curved crystal is harder to polish than a flat one.

The dial

The Cocktail Time’s dial is deeply textured with a radial sunburst pattern that changes character as the light moves across it. It photographs poorly — flat lighting kills the effect entirely — which is why the watch is consistently underrated by people who have only seen pictures of it.

This is one of the places where a spec sheet genuinely fails. We have not handled this watch and we are not going to describe how it feels; what we can say is that dial texture is the reason it costs more than a plainer automatic with identical published figures.

Sizing

The 47.6 mm lug-to-lug is long relative to the 40.5 mm case — this is a dress watch with fairly straight lugs, and on a wrist under about 6.5 inches it will read larger than the diameter suggests. The 33.8 mm SRP839 is the small-case version of the same idea.

The exhibition back is genuinely nice at this price
