Spring Drive is a third category. Grand Seiko’s 9R movements are powered by a mainspring, like a mechanical watch, but regulated electronically by Seiko’s Tri-synchro Regulator, like a quartz one. There is no battery — it winds like an automatic — and the seconds hand glides continuously instead of ticking. Grand Seiko states roughly ±1 second a day.

What Spring Drive is

Start with power. A Spring Drive stores energy in a mainspring, exactly like any mechanical watch, and you wind that mainspring the same way — by wearing the watch, since the 9R movements are automatic, or by hand at the crown. There is no battery anywhere in it.

The difference is what controls the release of that energy. A mechanical watch uses an escapement and a balance wheel that beat back and forth. Spring Drive replaces the beating escapement with a glide wheel that spins, and the speed of that wheel is measured and corrected electronically by Seiko’s Tri-synchro Regulator. The regulator draws the small amount of power it needs from the mainspring itself, so the watch is mechanically powered and electronically governed at the same time. That combination is the whole idea.

Why the seconds hand glides

This is the signature, and once you know it you can spot a Spring Drive across a room. A beating mechanical movement steps its seconds hand — six times a second on a 21,600 vph Seiko, eight on a Swiss 28,800 vph movement — so the hand advances in visible increments. A quartz movement ticks its seconds hand once per second, one deliberate step at a time.

Spring Drive does neither. There is no beating escapement stepping the hand and no once-a-second quartz tick. The glide wheel turns continuously under electronic control, and the seconds hand sweeps in one unbroken motion with no steps at all. It is the single most recognizable thing about the movement, and it is a direct consequence of how the movement works rather than a styling choice.

It is worth being precise about what “glide” actually means here: not a fast series of tiny steps that only looks smooth, but genuinely continuous motion, because the hand is driven by a wheel that is spinning rather than a balance that is beating. That is the detail that separates it on sight from even a high-beat mechanical sweep.

Accuracy

Grand Seiko states roughly ±1 second per day for Spring Drive, which works out to about ±15 seconds per month. That is far tighter than any mechanical Seiko in this catalog — the 6R35, for instance, is stated at -15 to +25 seconds per day — and it comes from the electronic regulator, not from a beating balance. The steadiness is quartz-like even though the power is mechanical.

It is not, however, the most accurate way to keep time. High-end quartz is generally more accurate still, and far cheaper to make. Spring Drive is not chasing the last fraction of a second per year; it is combining mechanical winding and a gliding hand with an accuracy a purely mechanical watch cannot reach.

How it differs from quartz

A quartz watch is battery- or solar-powered, times itself with a quartz crystal that oscillates when current passes through it, and ticks the seconds hand once per second. It is very accurate and very cheap, which is why quartz is everywhere. Spring Drive borrows the electronic-regulation idea but keeps none of the rest: no battery, no crystal-driven tick, and a mainspring in place of a cell.

Neither mechanical nor quartz

Put the two exclusions together and the point is clear. A purely mechanical watch has no electronics; Spring Drive has an electronic regulator, so it is not purely mechanical. A quartz watch runs on a battery with no mainspring; Spring Drive has a mainspring and no battery, so it is not quartz. Seiko calls the arrangement the Tri-synchro Regulator. The electronics run on power drawn from the mainspring itself, which is why the watch needs no battery despite being electronically governed.

The result is a movement with a mechanical heart and an electronic sense of time. The mainspring provides the force; the regulator provides the precision.
