Seiko’s solar calibers, the V-series, are quartz movements powered by light. Any light charges an internal capacitor rather than a disposable battery, so the watch never needs a routine battery change. The seconds hand ticks, because it is quartz. A full charge holds the watch running in the dark for months, and accuracy is quartz-accurate.
What a solar caliber is
A Seiko solar movement is a quartz movement with a different power source. Instead of a disposable cell, a translucent dial lets light reach a solar panel beneath it, and that panel converts light — daylight, a window, even room lighting — into electricity. The electricity charges a rechargeable capacitor, and the capacitor runs the movement. Everything downstream of the power source is ordinary quartz: a crystal oscillator times the watch, and a stepper motor advances the hands.
That is the whole idea, and it is why solar sits where it does. It keeps the accuracy and low cost of quartz while removing the one recurring chore quartz is known for — the battery. Read across the table and solar takes the best of both columns beside it: the accuracy and the ticking simplicity of quartz, and the no-battery ownership of a mechanical watch. What it gives up is the mainspring romance of mechanical and the throwaway simplicity of a cheap battery movement — trades most solar owners are glad to make.
The seconds hand ticks
A solar Seiko is quartz, so its seconds hand ticks once a second, stepping in single deliberate movements. It does not sweep and it does not glide. Put the pieces together and the low-maintenance case is clear. There is no winding, because it is not mechanical. There is no routine battery change, because it charges from light. It keeps quartz accuracy, so it barely drifts. And it runs for months on a full charge, so it tolerates long spells unworn. The only thing it asks is light, which ordinary daily wear or a spot near a window supplies without thought. For someone who wants a watch that keeps good time and mostly looks after itself, that combination is hard to beat.
