Seiko Solar and Citizen Eco-Drive work the same way: a solar cell under the dial charges a rechargeable cell that runs a quartz movement. On the calibers compared here both brands publish the same rate, ±15 seconds a month. The real differences are reserve (Seiko’s V115 runs about 12 months, Citizen’s E168 about 6), charging speed, and which watches each brand puts the technology in.
First, the name
“Eco-Drive” is Citizen’s name, not a generic term. Citizen says it created the name in 1994 and its US site says it launched the Eco-Drive brand in 1996. Seiko does not make an Eco-Drive watch; its equivalent is simply called Seiko Solar. So if you have seen “Seiko Eco-Drive” or “Prospex Eco-Drive” in a listing or a search suggestion, that is two brands’ vocabularies run together — what you are looking at is either a Seiko solar or a Citizen, and the dial will tell you which.
Citizen also got there first. It released the Crystron Solar Cell in 1976, which it describes as the world’s first light-powered analog watch, and Seiko’s own museum agrees: Seiko launched its own solar watch the following year, 1977.
How each brand describes the mechanism
The descriptions are nearly interchangeable. Seiko: “Light energy received by a solar cell (solar cell unit under the dial) is converted into electronic energy. The energy is stored in the rechargeable battery and is used to move the watch.” Citizen says Eco-Drive converts “any kind of light, from bright sunshine to dim indoor lighting” into power, with the cell under the dial in most models and a ring-shaped cell around the dial’s edge in some. Both are quartz watches: the seconds hand steps once a second, and the timekeeping is done by a quartz crystal, not by the light. The full Seiko mechanism is on the solar caliber reference.
Side by side, from the manuals
The fair comparison is caliber against caliber, because neither brand publishes one figure for its whole solar range. The table below takes the calibers inside the watches on this page, plus Seiko’s V157 as the common Seiko solar three-hander.

The Seiko figures come from the SUP467 and SSC700 product pages and the V1-series, V198 and 8B92 instruction manuals; the Citizen figures come from the Cal. E168 manual. Every stated rate here carries the same condition in the fine print: worn, between 5 and 35 °C.
Accuracy: a draw, on paper
Every solar caliber in that table that states a rate states the same one. That is not a coincidence of marketing; it is the ordinary class of a good analog quartz movement, and it is roughly two orders of magnitude tighter than a mechanical watch — Seiko’s 4R36 is rated −35 to +45 seconds a day. If accuracy is your deciding criterion, neither brand’s solar three-hander wins; the next step up is a watch that corrects itself, which is where the SSG021 comes in and which the most-accurate ranking covers.
Reserve: Seiko’s three-handers run longer
Citizen’s headline claim is that Eco-Drive “runs for over six months off a single full charge,” with an asterisk that “some models run for less than six months”, and it points to Power Save models that stretch to years. The E168 in the Promaster Dive is rated approximately six months. Seiko’s V115 is rated approximately twelve and the V157 approximately ten. The feature-heavy Seiko calibers — the V198 chronograph and the 8B92 radio-sync — fall back to six, and the 8B92 adds a power save mode that Seiko says keeps it running for approximately two years.
In practice this matters only for a watch that spends long stretches in a drawer. A solar watch worn most days in ordinary light never gets near the end of its reserve.
Charging: how much light is enough
Both manuals publish charging tables, and they are the most useful thing either brand prints. The number to look at is the short one — how long in a given light buys a day of running:
- Bright sun (100,000 lx): about two minutes buys a day on the V115, the V198 and the E168 alike.
- Cloudy daylight (10,000 lx): about 12 minutes on the V115, 9 on the V198, 11 on the E168.
- Indoors: the brands test at different light levels, so compare with care. Seiko quotes three hours at 700 lx (office lighting) for a day on the V115; Citizen quotes four hours at 500 lx for a day on the E168.
Citizen’s own advice is to give an Eco-Drive watch five or six hours of direct sunlight a month. The lesson from both tables is the same: a solar watch that lives under a shirt cuff in an office charges slowly, and a few minutes by a window does more than a day under ceiling lights.
The low-charge warning works the same way
When the stored charge runs low, both brands move the seconds hand in two-second jumps as a warning. Seiko describes it on its solar FAQ as a sign the energy stored “is reduced to an extremely low level”; the V198 manual says the watch will stop within 48 hours. Citizen’s E168 manual gives about four days from the start of the two-second movement to a stop. Either way, the fix is light, not a jeweler.
The rechargeable cell: the one real difference in wording
Neither brand publishes a number of years for the cell’s life, and they describe it differently. Citizen’s E168 manual calls it a cell that “will last the life of the watch” and says only an Authorized Service Center should replace it. Seiko’s V1-series manual says the secondary battery does not need periodic replacement, but that its capacity or charging efficiency “may gradually lower due to long-term use or operating environment,” and that replacing it requires professional skill.
We read that as the same physical reality described with different optimism, and we will not turn either sentence into a lifespan figure. The practical point for both: never let anyone fit an ordinary battery in place of the rechargeable cell — Seiko’s V198 manual warns that doing so can cause heat, bursting and ignition.
Where the brands really differ: what they put it in
This is where the decision actually lives. Citizen has built far more of its range on Eco-Drive, including the ISO-compliant Promaster Dive BN0168-06L on this page: 44 mm, 200 m with a screw-down crown, a mineral crystal and the E168 caliber. Seiko’s solar divers exist, but the ones listed at the US retailer we track are international-market references without a Seiko US specification page, so this site does not rank one — the quartz roundup explains why.
Seiko’s strength is at the ends. At one end is the SUP467, a 30.5 mm, 6.8 mm-thin solar dress watch with the V115’s twelve-month reserve. At the other are the Couturas: the SSC700 with a perpetual calendar, chronograph, alarm and a sapphire crystal, and the SSG021, which sets itself from a radio time signal. Neither of those has a direct Citizen counterpart in our registry, and Citizen’s comparable references are not something this page can speak to without their specification pages in front of it.
Buy the Seiko if
- You want the longest reserve in a three-hander: the V115 in the SUP467 is rated about twelve months.
- You want sapphire on a solar watch: both Couturas here list it; the Citizen diver lists mineral.
- You never want to set the watch: the SSG021’s radio sync does it for you, in range of a transmitter.
- You want a small, thin solar dress watch rather than a sports watch.
Buy the Citizen if
- You want a solar ISO-compliant diver: the Promaster Dive is the one in our registry.
- You want the platform with the longest history: Citizen was first in 1976 and has built more of its range on it.

Is Seiko Solar the same as Citizen Eco-Drive?
The same idea, different companies. Both use a solar cell under the dial to charge a rechargeable cell that runs a quartz movement. Eco-Drive is Citizen’s name for its version; Seiko calls its version Seiko Solar. On the calibers compared here, both publish a rate of ±15 seconds a month.
Does Seiko make Eco-Drive watches?
No. Eco-Drive is a Citizen name, created in 1994 according to Citizen. Seiko’s light-powered watches are sold as Seiko Solar.
Which lasts longer on a charge, Seiko Solar or Eco-Drive?
It depends on the caliber, not the brand. Seiko rates the V115 at about 12 months and the V157 at about 10; Citizen rates the E168 at about 6 months, and says some Eco-Drive models with Power Save run up to 7 years. Seiko’s V198 and 8B92 are also rated about 6 months.
Which came first, Seiko Solar or Citizen Eco-Drive?

Do solar watches ever need a new battery?
Not a disposable one. Citizen says the E168’s cell will last the life of the watch; Seiko says its secondary battery needs no periodic replacement but its capacity may gradually lower with long use. Neither publishes a lifespan in years. Replacement, if it ever comes, is a service-center job.
How long do I need to charge a solar watch?
In bright sun, about two minutes buys a day of running on the Seiko V115 and V198 and the Citizen E168. A full charge from empty takes far longer: 10 hours of bright sun for the V115, 11 for the E168, 5 for the V198. Citizen recommends five or six hours of direct sunlight a month.
